Korte beschrijving van het project
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) that causes progressive brain degeneration. CJD is a prion disease in which the causative agent is a misfolded protein. The incidence worldwide is around one case per million inhabitants per year. CJD is always fatal and no therapy or vaccine is available.
The main objectives of the Belgian national surveillance system for CJD are:
- to identify and report on all cases of vCJD occurring in Belgium.
- to describe the vCJD cases arising in terms of time and place.
- to report vCJD cases on both a national and an international level.
- to identify risk factors for vCJD cases
In 1998, following the detection of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in the UK, Belgium installed a surveillance system for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The objectives of this system were to identify vCJD cases and detect increases in CJD incidence. Diagnostic confirmation of CJD is based on autopsy after referral by neurologists. Reference centres perform autopsies and report to the surveillance system.
